aPlank Aluminum Siding Achieves ASTM E84 Class A Fire Rating
We’re excited to share some important news: aPlank’s Aluminum Siding with woodgrain finish has officially achieved a Class A rating in ASTM E84 testing, one of the most recognized fire performance standards in the building industry.
aPlank´s results in ASTM E84 testing
Flame Spread Index (FSI): 5
Smoke Developed Index (SDI): 30
What This Means?
ASTM E84, also known as the Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, measures how quickly flames spread and how much smoke develops when a material is exposed to fire. Materials are classified as:
Class A: FSI 0–25, SDI ≤ 450 (highest performance)
Class B: FSI 26–75
Class C: FSI 76–200
With an FSI of just 5, our siding significantly outperforms the threshold for Class A, showing minimal flame spread and very low smoke production.
Why It Matters?
Class A materials are the gold standard for fire safety, helping meet stringent building codes and providing peace of mind for property owners, architects, and builders. These results reinforce that aPlank siding combines aesthetics, durability, and safety, without compromise.
About the ASTM E84 Test
Testing was conducted by Intertek, a leading third-party certification and testing laboratory, using the ASTM E84 “Steiner Tunnel” apparatus. This rigorous evaluation ensures reliable, code-recognized results.
Looking Ahead
Safety and performance are central to our mission at aPlank. With our new ASTM E84 Class A rating, we’re proud to offer a siding solution that meets both your design vision and your fire safety requirements.
